HOLLYWOOD: LACK OF DIVERSITY THROUGH MOVIES AND TELEVISION

We all know that there has been a constant problem in the way that Hollywood has been casting and portraying its Films and TV shows for decades now. Everyone has noticed how the proportion of male and female leading roles are primarily given to white people. But how can they represent the world if they are only representing 1% of the population? NPR article, “Researchers Examine Hollywood’s Lack of Diversity” dives into the subject that “women make up just over half the U.S. population, but only one-third of speaking characters. And those roles were more likely to be sexualized by showing some nudity, wearing sexy clothing or being referred to as physically attractive. People of color are close to 40 percent of the population but only 28 percent of speaking characters. Half the TV and movies examined had no Asian speaking characters, and more than one-fifth had no black people in those roles.”

This article was written in February 2016. LAST YEAR! The views on diversity are still not being changed and its 2017. Although there have been some improvements on the diverse shows, movies and diverse leading roles; its still a problem that continues to happen. However, there is hope. We are seeing a positive progress with shows and movies like: “Wonder Woman”, “Black-ish”, “Pitch”, “Jane The Virgin”, “Fresh off the Boat”, “Empire”, Oscar Winning Movie “Moonlight”, “Dope”, "Master Of None", "Dear White People", "Orange Is The New Black" and a lot more. Let’s hope that 2017 is the age of rebirth in TV and movies that make ways for more diversity.
