"SEX AND THE CITY" . . . A TV SHOW AND NON FICTION . . . CAN WE HAVE BOTH?

"Sex And The City" opening credits Carrie Bradshaw in tutu

I think every woman that owns a TV knows about the infamous pink tutu, worn by the woman with the curly blonde hair that struts the streets of NYC with Manolo Blahniks. We might be more familiar with her go to phrase:

“I c o u l d n ‘ t h e l p b u t w o n d e r. . .”

Well, I couldn’t help but wonder what is it about the show,

“Sex and the City” that always made me so stir crazy obsessed with these four characters? It didn’t come to my attention, until recently, when I started re-watching series to find the answer.

Women are obsessed with this show because the series showcases an unrealistic lifestyle of how single women in their late 20s and early 30s should look and act like. And as much as women want to have that freelance job with an executive bank account, the show highlights a lifestyle not fit for an average American woman living on her own. Especially one living on her own in New York City.

We can fantasize all we want on upgrading our closets constantly and purchasing expensive clothes, but the reality is this:

“Sex and the City” focused on a stereotype that:

All Women Do ______.

Anyone can put a word in the blank space and assume all women do that. But this show puts the luxurious lifestyle on top of a pedestal and is saying “here … THIS is what EVERY woman is doing in America right now. Why aren’t you?”
