SMILING DOESN’T GET YOU ANYWHERE

Simone Biles is a household name. She has four gold medals and is currently competing on Dancing With The Stars, where she has wowed the judges, audience, dance partner and even herself. However, there has been some controversy recently when Biles was receiving constructive criticism after she had finished her trio performance of dancing to The Chainsmokers, Don’t Let Me Down, with her partner Sasha Farber and Brittany Cherry- Argentine. Host, Tom Bergeron, asked Biles in front of millions of viewers, “I was waiting for you to smile at some of the compliments — you didn’t” to which a shy but bold Biles says, “smiling doesn’t win you gold medals”.
Funny, Bergeron, were you even focusing on Biles performance or were you too busy waiting for her to smile during her performance and when she received the critic from the judges? Did her whole performance mean nothing to you if she didn’t smile? Talk about someone who needs to learn a thing or two about hard work rather than focusing on someones facial expressions.
There are many problems here, one being that a woman does not need to smile in order to win a competition or better yet a woman does not need to smile in order to live her life. Men do not receive that argument, it is always geared towards women. Biles pushed the haters aside backstage when she was being interviewed by Entertainment Tonight saying, “I feel like everyone has their own opinion, clearly, and I feel it’s just how you take it,” adding, “I feel like I am trying, I am being honest, but if they don’t see that, I don’t know what more I can do.” Simone is no stranger to clapping back at haters, but this really seems like a win for any woman who has been told to smile by a clueless guy” (Pop Sugar).
Women do not need to use a smile in order to go far in life. This is something that every man and woman needs to realize and teach not only themselves but everyone around them. Just because women do not smile, does not mean that they are in any means being emotional or emotionless. We just chose to not smile, and men need to realize that not all women need to smile in order to get ahead.
